Most landlords will need someone (for example a parent, guardian, Social Services) to stand as a “rent guarantor” (who will guarantee that the rent will be paid) for someone aged 16/17 years.
If you do manage to find somewhere to live, you may need to give a large deposit and/or rent before you move in. Whether you can afford the accommodation you choose is a big issue to think about because Housing Benefit (financial help with your rent) is means tested. If you want to rent from the Council, complete an application form and have a look at the CHOOSEaHOME section for more information.
One of the best ways to find private accommodation is on the grapevine. Keep your eyes open for someone you know who is leaving a flat or knows of rooms to let. Other good places are local newspapers and adverts in shop windows.
